How long will my springs last?
The life cycle of a typical garage door spring is usually 10,000 cycles, one cycle is one time up and down. Since many of us use our garage door as the ‘front door’ to our home, these cycles can go quickly! For example, if your door goes through about 5 cycles a day, the lifespan of the spring should be about 5 years. There are other garage torsion springs which will last longer, however. Superior Overhead Door can order and install high cycle springs for you if this is your preference.
Is it dangerous to DIY my Torsion Spring replacement?
Yes. Garage door springs can be dangerous. The danger lies in what happens if and when the springs suddenly fail. Since the spring is under constant tension, a sudden failure can cause the spring to break apart violently.
Can I change the springs myself?
It is NOT recommended to change your own garage door springs? A garage door with a broken spring is very heavy and can crash down, with hundreds of pounds of force, causing injury or death. The springs need to be wound to add tension and can cause damage or injury if not done properly.
Spring replacement should be done by a professional. Superior Overhead Door Professional
Technicians have years of training and experience, and are bonded and insured. They have the proper tools to be sure the spring replacement gets done correctly the first time.
If one spring breaks, should I change out both?
If your garage door has two springs, and one breaks, it is generally recommended that BOTH be replaced. Springs have an expected lifespan, so if one breaks, typically the second spring is not far behind. Think of it like brakes on a car, you probably wouldn’t change out just the right front brake, would you? No, you would change out both. The same holds true for garage door springs.
How can I get affordable spring repair?
Changing out broken garage door springs is not terribly costly. It usually costs between $225-$400 spending on the type of spring, and whether there are one or two torsion springs.
How long will it take to get my springs replaced?
Superior Overhead Door can fix your broken springs the same day (or next day) in most instances. The service call will typically take about an hour.
