Cleaning and Lubricating your Garage Door
Cleaning and lubricating your garage door system every 6 months is important for the longevity of the system, and reducing noise. Here are the two types of lubricants that our technicians use – we purchase them from Menard’s. NEVER use an oil-based lubricant on your system (silicone and lithium-based lubricants should be used). Here’s what you can do:
- Keep the inside of your tracks clean – wipe out your vertical tracks (sides of garage), with a slightly damp rag.
- Apply a small amount of lubricant spray to steel rollers, and nylon rollers with exposed bearings (nylon rollers with sealed bearings do NOT need lube).
- Spray a small amount of lubricant to garage door hinges and any ‘pivot points,’ as well as along the top of the torsion spring.
- Use a small amount of lithium grease on your garage door rail (where the trolley rides). The rail is the long piece of metal (horizontal) that your garage door trolley rides along to open and close.
